What is High Temperature Polyimide Film?
High-temperature polyimide film is a specialized plastic film prized for its ability to perform reliably under extreme temperature conditions while maintaining excellent electrical, mechanical, and chemical properties.
Six Features of High Temperature Polyimide Film
- High-Temperature Resistance: Withstands temperatures exceeding 400°C. Its long-term operating temperature range is -200°C to 300°C, and it exhibits no distinct melting point.
- Excellent Electrical Insulation: Exhibits a dielectric constant of 4.0 at 1 kHz and a dielectric loss of only 0.004-0.007. It is classified as a Class F to H insulation material.
- Excellent Mechanical Properties: The tensile strength of unfilled polyimide is typically above 100 MPa.
- Self-Extinguishing: Polyimide is a self-extinguishing polymer and exhibits low smoke emission.
- Non-toxicity: Polyimide is non-toxic and can withstand thousands of sterilization cycles.
- Chemical Stability: Some polyimide varieties are insoluble in organic solvents and exhibit stability against dilute acids.
Common Applications of High Temperature Polyimide Film
Because of these properties, high-temperature polyimide films are used in many demanding applications, including:
- Electronics: Flexible printed circuits (FPCs), insulation for wires and cables (especially in aerospace and high-performance motors), slot liners in motors and transformers, capacitor dielectric.
- Aerospace & Aviation: Insulation for wiring, thermal blankets, components in satellites and spacecraft.
- Automotive: Insulation for sensors and components in high-heat areas like engine compartments.
- Industrial: High-temperature labels, gaskets, diaphragms, pressure-sensitive tapes for high-temperature masking.
